Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer
Non-melanoma skin cancers — mainly basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) — are the most common cancers in New Zealand. While less aggressive than melanoma, they can still cause extensive local damage if untreated, particularly on the face, nose, ears, and lips. DermLab’s Dermatologists provide expert diagnosis and treatment of all types of non-melanoma skin cancers, with a focus on complete removal, long-term safety, and the bestpossible cosmetic outcomes.
Common Warning Signs
A sore that doesn’t heal, or keeps coming back
A scaly or crusted patch
A new growth, lump, or
ulcer on sun-exposed skin
A red, raised, or thickened area, especially on the lips or ears
If you have any of these, it’s important to get checked promptly.
Types of Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) The most common type of skin cancer. BCCs grow slowly and rarely spread, but can invade surrounding tissue if left untreated.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) More likely than BCC to spread (metastasise), especially if neglected or in high-risk sites such as the lips and ears. Early treatment is critical.
