Why Specialist Dermatology Care Matters

When it comes to your skin, who you choose to trust makes all the difference. Skin cancer is New Zealand’s most common cancer, and chronic skin conditions like acne, psoriasis, and eczema affect thousands of people every day. Getting the right diagnosis early, and being confident in the advice you’re given, is vital.

Why Specialist Care Matters

Skin is the body’s largest organ and one of the most complex. Getting it right requires depth of training and daily experience in recognising subtle signs. At DermLab, our combined team approach means:

  • Early skin cancer detection: catching melanomas and non-melanoma cancers before they spread.

  • Safe and precise surgery: from standard excisions to Mohs micrographic surgery.

  • Full-spectrum skin health: treatment for inflammatory skin conditions, infections, nail problems, and hair loss.

  • Evidence-based cosmetic care: safe, natural procedures under local anaesthetic.

Our Dermatologists

Dermatologists are fully recognised specialists in diagnosing and treating skin, hair, and nail conditions. Training takes over a decade, including medical school, general medical training, and years of focused dermatology experience.

At DermLab, our Dermatologists:

  • Lead the team

  • Perform Mohs surgery and complex skin cancer operations

  • Supervise GP Skin Cancer Doctors

  • Oversee management of severe conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and melanoma

  • Offer cosmetic surgery under local anaesthetic, including blepharoplasty, fat transfer, liposuction, and hair transplantation

Our GP Skin Cancer Doctors

DermLab’s GP Skin Cancer Doctors are not general GPs. They have undertaken advanced additional training, including the Advanced Certificate in Dermatology and Skin Cancer, developed with the Australasian College of Dermatologists. This ensures they:

  • Are skilled in skin cancer detection using dermoscopy and mole mapping

  • Perform skin checks and biopsies

  • Carry out many excisions under local anaesthetic

  • Always work under Dermatologist guidance for complex or high-risk cases

This unique model means patients can access timely care without sacrificing safety or accuracy.

A Collaborative Approach

What makes DermLab different is the way our team works together. Our Dermatologists and GP Skin Cancer Doctors collaborate closely:

  • Complex or suspicious cases are reviewed by Dermatologists.

  • All patients benefit from ongoing specialist oversight.

  • GP Skin Cancer Doctors keep up regular training and audits to ensure the highest standards.

  • Patients know that no matter who they see, their care meets Dermatologist-led benchmarks.

More Than Skin Cancer

While skin cancer detection and surgery are at the core of what we do, DermLab also provides care for the full range of skin health:

  • Eczema & dermatitis — treatment plans to calm inflammation and repair skin barrier.

  • Psoriasis — from creams and phototherapy to modern biologic medications.

  • Acne & scarring — medical treatment, minor surgery, and CO₂ laser resurfacing.

  • Rosacea — advanced therapies for redness and flushing.

  • Hair loss — including both medical and surgical treatments (hair transplantation).

  • Nail conditions — fungal infections, psoriasis, and melanoma under the nail.

Cosmetic Dermatology with Safety in Mind

Many people don’t realise that dermatology is also about improving appearance safely. At DermLab, our cosmetic procedures are all performed as day-stay treatments under local anaesthetic, avoiding the risks of general anaesthetic. These include:

  • Blepharoplasty (eyelid lift)

  • Autologous fat transfer

  • Hair transplantation

  • Mini-facelift with minimal incisions

  • Liposuction for contouring

Our CO₂ laser is also used to treat wrinkles, acne scars, rhinophyma, xanthelasma, and even to reduce the risk of skin cancer in sun-damaged skin.
