Vitiligo
Vitiligo is a skin condition where the immune system attacks pigment-producing cells (melanocytes), causing white patches of skin. It can affect any part of the body, including the face, hands, and scalp, and sometimes the hair and eyes. Vitiligo is not contagious, but because it changes appearance, it can have a major impact on confidence, self-esteem, and quality of life. At DermLab, our Dermatologists provide expert diagnosis, evidence-based treatments, and supportive care tailored to each patient.
Treatment Options
Treatment depends on the extent, site, and progression of vitiligo:
Topical corticosteroids or calcineurin inhibitors — for early or localised vitiligo
Oral or short-course treatments — in selected cases to stabilise rapid progression
Narrow band UVs phototherapy (not yet available at DermLab) — specialist centres may provide this
Cosmetic camouflage — high-quality skin camouflage creams to blend patches
Support & monitoring — screening for associated autoimmune conditions when indicated (Note: While some therapies like light treatment may not yet be offered at DermLab, patients can be referred appropriately if needed.)
Signs & Symptoms
Well-defined white patches of skin
Often symmetrical on both sides of the body
Common on the face, hands, elbows, knees, and around body openings
May affect hair (white or grey patches) or eyelashes/eyebrows
Occasionally associated with other autoimmune conditions (thyroid disease, type 1 diabetes)
Frequently Asked Questions

There is no permanent cure, but treatments can slow progression and help restore pigment in some patients.
-
Limited sun may stimulate pigment, but unprotected sun increases the risk of sunburn and skin cancer. Sunscreen is always recommended.
