Skin Biopsies

A skin biopsy is a simple medical procedure where a small sample of skin is taken and examined under a microscope. It is the most accurate way to diagnose skin cancers (melanoma, BCC, SCC), precancerous spots, rashes and inflammatory skin diseases , and unusual moles or growths.

At DermLab, biopsies are usually performed immediately during your appointment, so you don’t need to return for another booking.

Why It’s Used

  • To confirm or rule out skin cancer

  • To diagnose unusual or changing moles

  • To investigate unexplained rashes or chronic skin conditions

  • To guide treatment decisions with an accurate diagnosis

How It Works

  1. Preparation – The area is cleaned and numbed with a small injection of local anaesthetic.

  2. Sampling – A tiny portion of skin is removed using a specialised technique (shave, punch, or incisional biopsy).

  3. Closure – Most biopsies don’t require stitches, but if they do, dissolvable or removable sutures are used.

  4. Pathology – The sample is sent to a specialist laboratory for analysis.

  5. Results – Results are usually available within a few days, and your Dermatologist will contact you promptly.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • You’ll feel a small sting from the anaesthetic, but the procedure itself is painless.

  • Most biopsies leave only a tiny mark. If stitches are required, the Dermatologist will minimise scarring as much as possible.

  • Typically 3–5 working days, depending on the pathology laboratory.
