Hair Transplant Surgery
Hair transplant surgery is a permanent solution for hair loss. Healthy hair follicles are taken from donor areas (usually the back and sides of the scalp) and transplanted into thinning or balding areas. At DermLab, hair transplantation is performed with Dermatologist oversight to ensure safe technique, natural results, and long-term success. Unlike overseas 'hair factories,' we combine medical expertise in hair loss with advanced surgical skill — ensuring every patient receives a personalised plan, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
Techniques We Use
FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) – individual follicles are removed from the donor area and transplanted; tiny circular scars are virtually invisible.
FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant/Strip Method) – occasionally used when large graft numbers are needed; involves a donor strip of skin from the back of the scalp, closed with fine sutures.
Adjunctive therapies – PRP and prescription treatments to support graft survival and stimulate surrounding hair.
How It Works
Consultation & Diagnosis – Dermatologist assesses your hair loss pattern, health, and suitability for transplant
Planning – hairline design, graft number, and donor site capacity are carefully mapped
Extraction – follicles harvested individually (FUE) or by strip (FUT)
Preparation – grafts are trimmed and prepared under a microscope
Implantation – grafts placed into tiny recipient sites at natural angles for realistic density
Recovery – scabs shed after 7–10 days; transplanted hairs shed initially, with regrowth starting from 3–4 months
Results – visible regrowth from 6 months, with full results at 12–18 months
Why Choose DermLab Over Overseas Clinics
Dermatologist expertise – Hair loss has many causes (genetic, hormonal, autoimmune, scarring alopecia). Our Dermatologists diagnose and manage the underlying condition, not just perform surgery.
Safety – procedures performed in a sterile, accredited environment in NZ; not rushed or production-line operations.
Natural results – grafts are placed at the correct angle, depth, and density to mimic natural growth.
Long-term planning – we consider your age, progression of hair loss, and future needs. Many overseas clinics transplant too low or dense, which looks unnatural over time.
Accountability & follow-up – your care team is here in Hamilton, not thousands of kilometres away. We provide ongoing follow-up and medical support.
Integrated care – if required, treatments such as prescription medicines, PRP, or microneedling are combined to optimise results.
What It Improves
Male pattern baldness (receding hairline, thinning crown)
Female pattern hair loss
Eyebrow and beard restoration (selected patients)
Hair loss following trauma or surgery (scarring alopecia, burns)
What to Expect
Procedure time – 4–8 hours depending on graft numbers
Anaesthesia – local anaesthetic; you remain awake and comfortable
Recovery – mild swelling/redness for a few days; most patients return to work in 3–5 days
Longevity – transplanted hairs are permanent; surrounding hair may continue to thin, requiring planning or adjunctive therapy
